Licencing scheme for dealers of 'Non Domestic Knives'???

E-mail Print PDF

I've got to apologise for not having blogged anything for a while, I've been away teaching my Tactical Edge Combatives seminars all over the place, I've been away training with my teacher- Master at Arms James A Keating in the USA; its been a very busy time. In between all that I've been in the papers a few times & interviewed on Radio for my views.

I got contacted today by my friend, Councillor Jim Millar. He contacted me to give me the heads up about the Governments latest 'smart idea'. It had been mentioned before, but it seemed to go away; but truely bloody awful ideas never seem to die a natural death in politicians & civil serpants heads, & the idea of licencing shops & dealers that sell 'non domestic knives' has reared its stupid & pointless head again.

So what is a 'non domestic knife' exactly & how does it differ from domestic knives? The government is basically classing any field or hunting knife, folding knife, or fantasy knives (stupid things they are) as 'non domestic knives'. Now, a £10 hunting knife is a piece of garbage. I have collected custom & handmade blades for many years now. Its an offshoot of my profession as a martial arts instructor with a specialisation in the SE Asian & Western blade arts. Without blowing my own trumpet, I REALLY know a thing or three about edged tools & weapons. I count some of the worlds master bladesmiths as friends, & I own many of their works. A cheap knife is made out of cheap & nasty steel. Its got terrible edge geometery, is generally as sharp as a brick. I demonstrated this live on the sofa at GMTV with a really nasty looking fantasy knife I'd bought off ebay. The point I was making was one of 'perception v's reality', as the most scary looking objects are not always the most dangerous. This lump of steel didn't cut my bare skin though I sawed it against my arm, I wouldn't try that with ANY knife in my kitchen! Many of the really scary looking knives you see are actually NOT very effective weapons. They are too blunt to piece clothing, some won't even cut flesh. A few I have handled would have probably fallen to pieces if they were used in anger. Yes, they can be used as weapons & could potentially kill someone; but for one minute look in your kitchen!

See that serrated JML kitchen knife many people (& possibly you) have in the kitchen? That will cut through clothing, skin, muscle, blood vessels & organs with ease. It is available for free in many kitchens, & can be shoplifted in many supermarkets & general goods type shops. The steak knife is designed to cut flesh, & you can buy a whole pack of them cheaply or steal one from the kitchen drawer. That craft knife in your toolkit is a favoured weapon on the streets, used by people who don't want to kill, but to visibly maim you by slashing you up. You can steal one out of the toolkit, or off the shelf of a shop- or buy one for 99p & get five free blades too. See that screwdriver? Perfect thrusting weapon! Did you know one of the daggers issued to the WW2 OSS & SOE units was shaped like a large phillips head screwdriver? It was shaped like that because a normal knife wound closes up when the knife is withdrawn from the thrust, were the screwdriver punches a larger wound cavity that doesn't close up so much; more blood out & air in (carrying bacteria that cause secondary infections).

Let me be blunt (like one of those cheap non domestic knives....sorry couldn't resist that one). I worked nightclub doors for 19 years, & in that time I saw more knife incidents than you could shake a stick at. I worked in places where knife carrying was endemic. I took many edged weapons off people during searches. I know doorstaff from all over the UK who have had similar experiences, & who all say the same as I do. The vast majority of people carrying offensive weapons ARE NOT CARRYING NON DOMESTIC KNIVES!!!! I took a haul of knives & shanks I'd confiscated off people during searches into parliament with me a few years ago when I gave a presentation to MSP's there on my views; NOT ONE WAS A 'NON DOMESTIC KNIFE'.

The problem is that the politicians & civil serpants don't truely understand the people who are carrying weapons, & they don't really understand the reality behind the weapons that are being carried & those that are NOT being carried. I remember a few years ago being on Radio Scotland, & on wth me was John Carnochan from the VRU. Before we got interviewed they played an excellent bit of investigation, where they went into some places in Strathclyde & interviewed some local chavs. The reporter asked them what weapons they & others carried. The answers? They carried domestic knives because they could be easily obtained either straight out of the drawer, or easily stolen from shops. Immediately after the interview was played John Carnochan started harping on that Lock Knives were the real problem, blah blah blah. He didn't bother listening to the voices coming straight from the horses mouths! In his case he is a former senior policeman who would be happy to see his own grandmother banned. Lets be honest, at that level officers are political animals so maybe it suits him to ignore the truth. Here's the truth from someone who has 'been there & done that'. The majority of criminals DON'T CARE about 'non domestic knives' being more difficult to buy BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT CARRYING THEM! The few that are will just carry kitchen knives after they have to throw away their cheapo hunting knife or Ninja Fang of Death fantasy knife. The majority of them are wanting to carry something that can be thrown away after use, so they want something cheap or preferably free. As someone who teaches counter edged weapons skills to Special Forces operators I have to say I'd rather face someone with that Ninja Fang of Death from Victor Morris' than the serrated JML knife or carving knife out of the kitchen.

A decent hunting knife, field knife, or even (not allowed to call them this now) combat knife is actually no more dangerous or deadly than a domestic knife. The difference is that a good 'non domestic knife' is made to be more robust & hold an edge longer when used hard in the field as a tool. It won't cause any worse of a wound than any kitchen knife. Now, your chav has no advantage by carrying a 'non domestic knife. Its robustness & other qualities doesn't mean anything to them, as they will generally throw the knife away after they nail someone with it. The domestic knife does everything they need & its free! Granted, some non domestic knives have speciality uses, but not too many chavs will spend years studying the use of the Bowie, main gauche, Espada y daga, etc so don't panic (& I'm the only Bowie Instructor in the UK & I promise I won't teach them). The 'non domestic knife' looks more frightening, but people trust me- your kitchen knife will do the same thing or worse!

Now, local councils have enough on their plates. The government has now decided to plant another pile or work on their laps, & we will all have to pay for it. Kenny Mac has tried to make it sound all warm & fuzzy by saying that councils will have a great deal of say in how the new legislation will be applied, but its still a whole bunch of work that councils will have to organise & enforce- & its a complete & total waste of time! I'm very dissilussioned by the whole way that the Scottish Parliament is now approaching violence reduction. You have a constant flow of BS pointless & borderline embarrasing 'initiatives' from them. From their attempt to bring in a bunch of gang members into parliament to ask them what it would take to stop them carrying knives (I heard from folks in parliament they could hardly keep them under control). People, I have met & had to deal with these folks, & all that did was make them think they were such bad-asses that they had a bunch of suckers invite them into the parliament for a bit of a laugh, they see you nice intelligent middle class people as idiots! We then had the 'lets get maxilliofacial surgeons in to explain to chavs how terrible knife wounds are- pleeeeease, are you kidding me? All you'll end up with are some really shell shocked surgeons after a bunch of Neds have slagged them down & cheeked them up. You have John Carnochan & co saying its going to take ten years to make any difference to things; well thats handy, they get another ten years on a VERY nice salary which takes them to pension time possibly, hmmmmmmm?? Oh, lets not forget that as far as they're concerned Scotland is Strathclyde.

Lets think about what might make a difference. First, forget about the tool. Regardless of what you try to control or ban, criminals will continue to carry weapons & commit crimes. Lets face it, handguns are totally illegal but criminals still obtain them & carry them. This approach doesn't work & these stupid & inneffective measures which treat EVERY LAW ABIDING PERSON in the same way as the criminals & thugs just inconveniance decent sportsmen & enthusiasts. Remember Ken Macs predessessor & his famous "no-one has any reason to own a sword or have one in their home" speech? Talk about stepping on your own wedding tackle with golf shoes! Within an hour he had battle re-enactment enthusiasts, martial arts groups, blacksmiths, Scottish Dancers etc, all phoning up to give him a piece of their minds. The tool is not the problem, it is the person who has the mindset to mis-use that object that needs controlled. Its a funny society we live in just now. Someone doesn't pay their VAT & they get 12 years, but someone commits a vicious attack leaving a decent person maimed & they get 3 years??? We need to clean up the streets & realise that many of these predators who are well known to the police belong locked behind bars where they can't hurt people. Stop the fines, stop the community service, stop the kid gloves 'PC' treatment of the thugs.

I've stated before that I think that we need to be more aggressive in the way that repeat offenders are treated. I am convinced that a 'three strikes & you're out'style law would reduce violent crime considerably. Really bad violent crimes should be punished with ruthless sentences, get the scum off the streets! I've stated before that parents need to be MADE to take responsibility for their children. They would soon start controlling their 'little chavs' if they kept getting hammered with fines everytime Little Johnny got charged with vandalism or breach of the peace. I've stated before that we need to make sure young children need to get GOOD lifeskills training at school as an age where they can be influenced & moulded, so we are producing the good citizens of tomorrow. When I do school 'taster sessions' of my Little Ninjas programme many school teachers are very taken with the way we get over concepts like discipline, respect & courtesy to the children by a combination of special games, drills & positive leadership. I've stated before that programmes like The Cutting Edge have been shown to be the most effective way to reduce weapons carrying amongst youths on a local basis, but these programmes need to be delivered by the right people & they really should be delivered at school.

I know that many of my comments make me PNG amongst the people who come up with all the 'initiatives' that are flowing from the Government, but I'm not a 'yes man' & I say it how it is. We need someone to wake up & smell the coffee, & realise that there are people like me out there who KNOW & UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM & that we might just have some good ideas on how to tackle it. The trouble is that many politicians & civil serpants just don't seem to have the guts or the length of vision to choose the path that might just yield results, & they'd rather just grab a quick headline.

I'm just so saddened

A man was stabbed to death in front of his 3 year old child!

He was on his way to see his newborn child.

It doesn't get much worse than that!

This one really got to me. I have a 2 year old little boy who I love more than I could ever put into words. The thought of any child having to watch their father get attacked, & then die in front of them is beyond the pale. A grieving wife is now lying in a hospital bed, with a newborn who will never get to feel his dad hold him. My heart is absolutely aching for them!

I'm angry as well. We had a meeting at the parliament with A4E on Wednesday. A4E are a company that are heavily involved with providing training to offenders, so they can get into a decent job & break the cycle of offending. We were discussing various issues, & basically seeing how we could work together on the issue of violence reduction & knife crime. One thing that came up was the education establishment in Scotland, & how education departments in Scotland just won't work with external trainers. I've had this problem for some time now. I've offered anti-bullying workshops to the education dept of our local authority. Guess what, they're not interested. I've done the workshops for some teachers & they LOVE what we do. The teachers comment that they have had NO TRAINING on how to deal effectively with bullying & that they learn as much from our workshops as the kids do. But the folks at the top say there is no bullying problem & that 'there are effective measures in place'. What a crock of rubbish! I asked a class of P7's recently who amongst them had experienced bullying at school, & out of around 30 of them 98% of them put their hands up! I have nearly 200 kids who train in my martial arts classes in Angus, & 90% of them have experienced bullying. Many of them have been brought to us specifically because of bullying! I have offered our Stranger=Danger programme, where we teach valuable personal safety skills to primary age children. No martial arts, no self defence, just how to stay safe & avoid adult predators. Guess what, not interested. Now, guess what, the powers that be who run education at a national level are not wanting anti knife crime education programmes to be offered in schools. I know several people who work in the Scottish Parliament, so I hear a great deal that goes on & is said there. The justice side of things wants schools to offer pupils anti knife crime education, the education side of things doesn't want this.

Here's the skinny from someone on the coal face. If education departments don't realise that they need to loosen up & use people who have expertise in specialist areas then they are going to be very sorry in the long run. If we want to effectively get to children then we need to get them when they are a captive audience, so we get to as many of them as possible. Doing them as 'community education' projects is useless, as generally the people you need to get there aren't going to be there- simple as that! Bullying, knife crime, anti social behaviour are all part of the same problem. For the sake of our children we need to provide them with training that will enhance their lives. Remember, these kids are going to be adults some day. The guy who stabbed the father to death was a child once. We need to look long term, & try to stop as many kids as possible from turning into an adult like the 22 year old who robbed two children of their father.

So, here's my message to the Education Minister & all those in positions of authority. Its time to stop messing around. Its time for you to stop refusing anti bullying programmes simply because you're scared that providing them is an admission of a bullying problem. Its time to stop trying to cover your own backsides because you have some illogical concern that speaking about knife crime in schools will cause everyone to start carrying knives. Its time for us to start working together, because the longer we don't....the longer we don't effectively tackle the problems we face using effective measures; the larger the potential bodycount is going to be. Everytime another young person loses their life in a seconds stupidity I hope you stop & think to yourself that your dithering in some part allows these tragedys to happen, & that you have the ability to possibly stop it happening again.

My heart goes out to the mother & her children in their grief!

Public Petitions Committee Knife Debate

E-mail Print PDF

I'm gutted!

I was invited to the Public Petitions Knife Debate at the Scottish Parliament on Friday 23rd of Jan. Unfortunately I couldn't make it, as on the Thursday I was struck down with a nightmare sickness bug & was in a hell of a state. I thought that they probably wouldn't appreciate the sound of me being violently sick all over the parliament floor drowning out the speakers.

I don't feel too bad, as Kenny MacAskill didn't make it either!

He decided that it was more important to shovel haggis in his mouth in Canada. Now, where I can understand a like for haggis; I'm rather partial to it myself. I think that his priorities in this instance may have been somewhat mixed up.

Maybe I'm just jealous that whilst I was being violently sick, he was enjoying a burns supper!

In all seriousness though, I think with all the very public announcements he has made about knife crime he really should have made an effort to be there due to his position as Justice Minister.

Never mind, barring nasty 'bugs' I'll be in parliament next week for a meeting with some folks who have similar ideas to me!

Disgusted......totally disgusted!

E-mail Print PDF

I just read this article in the Evening Standard newspaper, & it has totally disgusted me. I'll paste the story in below, & after you read it I'll tell you why I'm so disgusted & why I'm writing about it in my anti knife crime blog.

Robbery victim too honest ... so judge halts trial

Paul Cheston, Courts Correspondent
13.01.09

THE case against a man accused of robbing a woman in a terrifying gang attack was thrown out of court because his victim was deemed to be "too believable" in the witness box.

Judge Jamie Tabor, QC, praised driving instructor Denise Dawson, 36, for being "honest, utterly decent and brave" in giving evidence against 20-year-old Liam Perks.

But he stopped the trial on the grounds that her good character would unfairly sway the jury against the defendant, a self-confessed burglar.

Mrs Dawson, a mother of two, was repeatedly punched in the face when her car was surrounded by a gang of youths while she gave a student a lesson on a Bristol housing estate.

She identified Perks as the man who had leaned into the car and rummaged through the glove compartment while her laptop and mobile phone were snatched.

But the judge halted the trial at Bristol crown court on its first day because it was based solely on the victim's word against the defendant's - and she was too credible.

Mrs Dawson said she felt she had been "kicked in the teeth" by the ruling. She said: "I was absolutely terrified after I heard he had pleaded not guilty and I would have to go to court to testify.

"The whole incident was a nightmare and I felt sick when I was told the trial had collapsed. What more can I do? I positively identified someone from a video ID parade and was prepared to risk everything in going to court but it's still not enough.

"I considered giving up and quitting driving instructing because the attack left me scared but I just love it so much. Whenever I drive through the area I was attacked now I have the windows locked in fear of being attacked again."

The judge told the court: "Denise Dawson was a particularly impressive witness because she showed courage, clarity of thought and was undoubtedly honest.

"The jury may lend more weight to her evidence than her facts allow.

"You cannot be sure she got it right... had this been the Archbishop of Canterbury's son, would I have allowed (the trial) to go on? The answer is no."

He offered Mrs Dawson a £250 bravery award for her actions.

In a separate case, Perks admitted conspiracy to burgle for a gang which stole and sold on motorcycles and prestige cars. He will be sentenced for that offence later.

The court was told that Mrs Dawson had been giving a driving lesson on the Southmead estate in Bristol in December 2007.

Her student Jodie Dickinson, 26, was practising hill starts when a gang of youths surrounded the car.

The instructor locked the doors but her terrified pupil froze and stamped her foot on the brake, preventing them driving off.

Mrs Dawson locked the doors but one of the yobs smashed her rear window with a brick, reached in and grabbed her laptop before running off.

Mrs Dawson, who runs Denise's Driving School, chased him and asked for her computer back but he simply clutched it in his arms and walked away. She then returned to her Ford Focus after she spotted one of the youths rifling through her glove box. She later picked out Perks as that man.

Mrs Dawson suffered a broken nose when she was repeatedly punched in the face by other gang members, who ran off with her mobile.

Mrs Dawson said after the trial: "I feel Liam Perks got a better deal out of it than I did..

"I feel very upset - what more do they want? I can't sit there with a camera. How much more evidence can I get? My workload has gone down. It has knocked my confidence."

A spokesman for Victim Support said: "Witnesses and victims expect the court to look after them and it can be a devastating experience, as I'm sure it is in this case, when someone is cleared on a technicality."

This is just unbelievable. I'm sad to say that I truely believe that currently there is no such thing as justice in the UK. I've said before that I am sad that fraud cases very often receive far longer custodial sentences than cases of horrific attacks & murder; but the case above just takes the biscuit. Why am I writing about a case which doesn't involve a knife in this blog though?

The government says it is very concerned about youth/knife/gun/gang/violent crime. I'm sure that there are some people working in government who are genuinely concerned about those types of crime, though I am very critical of some of the ideas they come out with. The problem is that until the government takes a reality check, stops listening to all the hand wringing pressure groups, & starts listening to the normal good law abiding people out there- WE ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE ANY REAL DIFFERENCE TO THE PROBLEMS THAT THIS COUNTRY IS FACING.

The majority of the misery & heartache that decent law abiding people go through when THEIR RIGHTS ARE VIOLATED, is caused by the minority of HABITUAL CRIMINALS. I've said many times that in my experience working around the underbelly of society, it is the same small band of people who are 'well known to the police' who break into peoples houses & cars, attack people, maim & murder, take & deal drugs, & generally make the lives of everyone around them miserable. Unfortunately the government & lawmakers seem to be unable to comprehend that slapping these folk lightly on the wrist with community service & fines that they can pay back at £5 a month just doesn't work. Before we see any real reduction in youth crime, knife crime or gang crime the government has to stop trying to rehabilitate people who have proven that they are habitual criminals & are unreachable. Incidents like the one reported above just makes all the yobbos & chavs laugh even louder, & sends a message to them that they can get off with even more.

Want to see a real reduction in crime & anti social behaviour? It's simple! If someone commits 3 crimes such as burglary, theft, serious assault, drug dealing (on any scale), they receive a mandatory 15 year custodial sentence without potencial of parole or early release. There comes a point where our society has to take a reality check & realise that the nice touchy feely "lets try & rehabilitate the poor wee criminals, & we must respect their right to Sky TV & a movie every week" way of doing things isn't working. We need to become less tolerant of crime, & much harder on those people who refuse to be a good & productive part of our society & who prefer to cause harm instead. If the government built more prisons, & locked up repeat offenders so they couldn't harm the rest of us, we would see far fewer examples of the terrible crimes that have become all too common in our news as the predators who commit these crimes would be locked up where they can only prey on each other.

One final thing. If you read the terrible story above & are as disgusted as me, write a strong letter to your MP. Write a strong letter to the Justice Minister. Make some noise & make sure that everyone knows that incidents like this are totally unacceptable.

The Cutting Edge reaches Australia

E-mail Print PDF

I had the pleasure last night to be a guest on Jonathan Morrisons breakfast show on 2GB Radio based in Sydney Australia. Australia has been horrified by the shocking murder of a young man by other youths, where the boy was stabbed to death in public after an altercation of some sort.

On Jasons show we spoke about my programme, & how I thought we should be tackling violent crime & weapons carrying amongst young people. Jason really hit the nail on the head, commenting that we really need to address the problem of kids not having good lifeskills & make sure that they really understand the simple concept of right & wrong.

I did a bit of research & spoke to friends I have in Oz who train & teach the same bladearts as I do. It turns out that up to now the Australian government seem to have pretty much gone down the same illogical headline grabbing 'lets make it look like we're doing something' lines as our own governments; banning the carrying of knives, & banning certain types of knife. Why is this illogical? Well, the folks who carry weapons with the aim to hurt people are generally criminals & yobbos- they commit crimes, it's what they do, thats why they are called C R I M I N A L S folks. Making it completely illegal to carry any form of knife just inconveniences the decent law abiding people who benefit from being able to carry a knife as a tool for their work or pastime. It's time that governments stopped knee-jerk reactions that tar everyone with the same brush & take more sophisticated & intelligent approaches. Banning types of knife is equally pointless. Generally this ends up as "that looks scary, it must be dangerous so lets ban it". The truth is that no one type of knife is more dangerous than any other. A kitchen knife will out-cut a £30 'non domestic knife' every time! What I'm trying to say is that governments need to look long term at doing things that will work in reality, & stop doing the same tired old rubbish. Do they really think that the gangbangers will hand in their weapons at a 'knife amnesty'? The time & money would be better invested in implementing programmes to teach young kids about civil responsibility & life skills, & on effective law enforcement targeting problem areas aggressively.

Jason Morrison was correct with his concern that kids need to be taught right & wrong. One thing I've noticed is that society has become far more vicious down through the years. Since I was a teenager, through my years working the doors (almost 2 decades), through my years teaching self defence all over the UK & abroad (I've been training for over 28 years, & have been an instructor since 1987), I have seen people become quicker to use more extreme levels of violence. I have seen the troublemakers of my younger days have kids, & I've seen those kids grow up into even more vicious troublemakers. Think for a minute, unless they get good guidence at an early age from somewhere, what are the children of the current vicious generation of young criminals & thugs going to be like?

There is no magic bullet, no quick fix. We MUST start looking seriously at introducing effective life skills programmes for young children at primary school. When I do 'taster sessions' in local schools for our Little Ninjas programme we always get fantastic feedback from the teachers who watch, because they can't believe the way that we can get kids to enthusiatically learn about self discipline & practice it. Very often I hear later that the teachers have pinched a few of our methods. It is possible to really make a huge difference in a childs life if you get them young enough. If the children are getting bad influences at home, or at the least they have no real positive role model, then we have to look at making sure they get that good lifeskills guidence in school. Governments need to stop just looking at the current problem, & need to look at what is going to be a terrible long term problem if left unchecked. There is a tendency for governments to just really think about the period between general elections; well if they really want to make a difference to society they are going to have to think long term strategy, not short term tactics.

Anyway, it was a pleasure to speak to Jason Morrison & to get my ideas out in Australia. Its nice to get recognition from so far away.
